Milestones in the History of the Baloise Group


2009

Baloise has repositioned itself throughout the Group. The Safety World concept represents its commitment to make overall safety the focus of its company performance from now on: "Making you safer".


2008

Baloise is placing its German business units, Basler Versicherungen, Deutscher Ring Sachversicherungs-AG (DR Sach) and Deutscher Ring Lebensversicherungs-AG (DR Leben) under uniform management.


2007

Baloise establishes the life insurance company Baloise Life AG in Liechtenstein. The company offers investment-type life insurances in Europe.


Baloise commences operations on the Serbian market and establishes a new subsidiary for the distribution of life and nonlife insurance products.


Baloise acquires Croatian insurer Osiguranje Zagreb and thus ranks fifth in this upcoming market.


Basler Securitas is renamed "Basler Versicherungen" in Germany. This reinforces the "Basler" brand impact.


2006

Bâloise Luxembourg acquires Winterthur Europe Vie, boosting its core competence in the investment-type life insurance.


2005

Deutscher Ring acquires AEGON Lebensversicherungs-AG. It thereby takes over the investment-type life insurance and pension business from MoneyMaxx.


2004

The Group's Belgian company Mercator focuses exclusively on its insurance business and sells Mercator Bank to ING Belgium.


2003

Acquisition of the German Securitas insurance company; merger with the Baloise branch in Germany to form "Basler Securitas".


2001

Fortis takes over Baloise's insurance portfolio in Spain.


The Group's Belgian company is rebranded Mercator; its banking branch is renamed Mercator Bank.


2000

Baloise acquires Solothurner Bank SoBa, a regional Swiss bank domiciled in Solothurn, and renames it Baloise Bank SoBa.


The Belgian Group company Mercator & Noordstar takes over HBK-Spaarbank.


The Annual Statements 2000 are prepared under application of the International Accounting Standards (IAS) for the first time.


The Baloise Group's strategy is reformulated and given a succinct name: integrated financial services.

Sale of the equity stake in Rhein Rück to the US investment firm Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co.


1996

Baloise strategy: focus on key markets in Central Europe.


Foudation of "La Bâloise Vie (Luxembourg) S.A.".


Merger of the Belgian Baloise subsidiary Mercator with its financial services partner Noordstar to form Mercator & Noordstar. Advance to the top ten in Belgium.


1995

Baloise is the first Swiss insurer to adopt the FER guidelines (accounting and reporting recommendations) in its Annual and Half-Year Reports.


1991

Basler acquires majority stake in Rhein Rück.


1985

Expansion of international activities. Baloise is taking over several foreign insurance companies, including Deutscher Ring Life Insurance AG.

Foundation Basler Versicherungs-Aktiengessellschaft in Austria.

Foundation of Rhein Rückversicherungsgesellschaft (reinsurance).

Merger of the Baloise companies to form Basler, Versicherungsgesellschaft (BVG). For regulatory reasons, Basler-Leben is not included in the merger, becoming instead a BVG subsidiary.

Basler-Rückversicherungsgesellschaft transformed into ALBA Allgemeine.
